Our Mission
The Johnstown Historical Society enriches our community through the preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of collected local culture.
Our Vision
The Johnstown Historical Society fosters connections between a diversity of experiences in past and present local culture to strengthen the community.
Our History
Our story began in 1988 when Ardis Briggs-Tomlinson and a few other passionate individuals founded The Johnstown Historical Society. Ardis and her family moved to Johnstown in 1980 to take on the publishing of the The Johnstown Breeze newspaper. It was during those early days that Ardis had the privilege of meeting some of the town’s most remarkable residents. She interviewed a woman who bravely protected her children from a tornado, heard stories from those who witnessed the meteorite fall, and connected with workers from Johnstown’s one-of-its-kind sugar factory. Through these experiences, she began to see how truly special and rich in history Johnstown was. It was clear to her this community had a legacy that deserved to be preserved.

2019 Lifetime Achievement Award
In the early days of the Historical Society, Ardis and her team recognized the need for a strong foundation to ensure the Society’s success. They established the first Board of Directors, which would guide the Society’s mission and operations. This dedicated group of community members helped define the Society’s purpose, set strategic goals, and lay the groundwork for the museum. Their commitment to preserving Johnstown’s history shaped the Society’s direction and continues to inspire future generations. The founding board members were: Ardis Briggs (President), Karen Griffiths (Vice President), Nancy Jacobson (Secretary-Treasurer), Debbit Arndt (Director, and Norman Carlson (Director).
One of the Society’s earliest dreams was to create a museum that could showcase Johnstown’s history. After years of hard work, in 1998, discussions began between the Johnstown Historical Society and Johnstown’s Town Council about the potential location for the museum. That same year, the historic Parish home at 701 Charlotte Street came up for sale. With a shared vision, the two organizations collaborated to acquire this historic home and convert it into what is now the Historic Parish House and Museum.

The partnership between the Johnstown Historical Society and Johnstown’s Town Council continues to flourish, evolving into a strong and collaborative relationship. Together, we have undertaken numerous projects, celebrated significant milestones, and worked hand-in-hand to ensure that Johnstown’s history remains a vibrant and accessible part of our community’s identity.
Today, the Johnstown Historical Society continues to offer engaging exhibits, educational programs, and community events that celebrate the history of our beloved town. We’re proud to be stewards of the Historic Parish House and Museum and the many stories it holds, and we invite you to visit, learn, and connect with the history that makes Johnstown so unique.
Thank you for being a part of our journey.
